BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma out in Japan arcades this winter

August 6, 2012 11:54PM PDT

New sequel to BlazBlue series introduces three new fighters and overdrive system, location tests in session until August 12.

Arc System Works announced a new sequel to the BlazBlue series during last week’s Super Battle Opera Tougeki 2012 tournament held in Japan.

Titled BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma, the latest addition to the 2D fighting game series will feature three new characters: the muscular pugilist Azrael, the effeminate male Amane Nishiki who attacks with his plumage, and the female mercenary Bullet whose fighting style is similar to BlazBlue’s Makoto. Existing fighters in the series will have new animation sprites and new moves to their repertoire.

In addition, the game will feature a new overdrive system. Any character who activates overdrive mode in the middle of battle will gain specific battle properties that last for a set amount of time. Examples include Noel’s overdrive which increases the speed of her drive attacks and Arakune’s overdrive which lengthens the duration of his curses. Players can also perform a guard crush attack by expending a quarter of their drive gauge; the move will instantly break through an opponent’s block.

The sequel will be out in Japan arcades this winter, with location tests happening right now until August 12 across the country. No console versions have been announced at this point in time. Wii U Mass Effect 3 will use interactive comic – Report

BioWare has revealed the upcoming Wii U version of Mass Effect 3 will use an interactive comic to give players the opportunity to get up to speed on the series’ backstory and characters, and carry forward in-game decisions.

In an interview with GotGame, BioWare’s Melanie Faulknor told the site that since Wii U owners will not be getting the first two Mass Effect games, a Dark Horse-created interactive comic will guide players through the first two titles, and allow them to make story choices that will carry forward when they begin Mass Effect 3. No specific details were provided on how the story branching will work.

During the interview, Faulknor said the Wii U version of Mass Effect 3 will be developed by an external third party developer with previous Nintendo experience.

Last month, EA revealed the Wii U version of Mass Effect 3 will come bundled with the Extended Cut DLC; it was also revealed BioWare is preparing new single-player DLC for the game, most likely centering on Commander Shepard.

The Wii U is due out worldwide this holiday season, but Nintendo has yet to announce a price or a release date for the console. Speculation regarding the platform’s release window has ranged from November to December, and Nintendo has promised a “reasonable” price for the console.

Do games have to be photorealistic to effectively portray emotions like sadness and love?

On this week’s show we map out the upcoming legal showdown between EA and Zynga by getting advice from a real professor of law. Does EA have a strong case? Or will Zynga come out on top?

We also look at some recent comments from 2K boss Christoph Hartmann regarding the need for more photorealistic games. According to Hartmann, this is the only way games will be able to portray emotions like sadness and love in an effective way. Is he right? Or is he forgetting about some very important games?
