id Software closes mobile operations to focus on Doom 4

id Software co-founder and technical director John Carmack has confirmed that the studio has closed down its mobile gaming operations in order to focus on the development of Doom 4.

Carmack revealed his studio’s decision during his keynote speech at this year’s QuakeCon.

“We did make the decision to close up our mobile development, which saddens me a lot, in that I love doing the mobile work,” Carmack said during his keynote. “But we had some developers on there that we wanted to bring on to the Doom 4 project.

“I hope we get back to mobile in various ways in the future, but the big real aim is blockbuster, AAA titles, and for id that means Doom 4.”

Carmack revealed that his studio is sitting on a finished iOS project, but gave no more details. The studio head also stayed silent on the topic of Doom 4’s release date, saying that the project “will be done when it’s done”, and that “every decade, there will be a Doom, but hopefully we can do better than that”.

Doom 4 has been the subject of several cancellation rumours over the last two years. Last October, word spread that Doom 4 was “indefinitely postponed. At the time, Bethesda replied by saying: “Games are done when they are done, and no title under development at id has been postponed–indefinitely or otherwise.”

The publisher was again forced to reassure gamers of Doom 4’s existence earlier this year, saying: “Doom 4 is not cancelled. When we are ready to talk about it, we’ll let folks know.”

The game’s existence was first acknowledged in May 2008, when the developer sent out a press release stating that production had begun on the game.

At the 2011 Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), Carmack said that the core team on Rage would move to Doom 4 development following the release of its latest shooter.

Dota 2 is scheduled for PC and Mac release this year. The game combines action and real-time strategy elements in multiplayer matches that pit teams of player-controlled heroes against one another. The game will include integrated voice chat and computer-controlled characters that will take over for players who disconnect during play sessions, as well as a coaching system, where veteran players will have the chance to tutor newcomers.

Dota 2 Diaries: Part 1
We cover the basic mechanics of the game and the importance of last-hitting/denying.

Dota 2 Diaries: Part 2
Donkeys, runes, and our very first hero kill are just some of the exciting things that happened in episode two of the Dota 2 Diaries.

Dota 2 Diaries: Part 3
Zorine throws Ed into his first five-versus-five co-op bot match, and with a little help from their friends, attempts to teach him about what it means to work and communicate effectively in a team. How many times will he let them down?

Out With The New, In With The Old: Video Game Controversy

@Gareth Robinson , the episode was good while you were talking about the controversy.

However you missed the point when you started talking about customer complaints. You said people expects crap befora a game is released –  “instead of looking for sequels and new ips they just assume it will be crap” – this is wrong, people  tend to assume things will be epic when you talk about their favorite sequels or titles they are looking after, specially when the media, such as game spot and other vehicles, tend to MARKET such realeases.

Another point, just after the above, where you (in my opinion) went totally in the wrong direction, was when you mentioned about people complaining, you said “they’r favorite franchise is getting ruined as if  they have onership over it at the first place”.  I ask you, why should people not complain? Following the shows name, “IN WITH THE OLD” would you not complain about a faulty mega-drive cartrige? Or that a dumb developer turned your castlevania into a super-mario game?

People do have the right to complain, and people do have a certain degree ownership on franchises if you think that they are the ones that support it. Criticism is good as long as fans are reasonable and protect the gaming community against corporative greed and rip offs.

It was specially funny  to see this second point you made with Diablo cutcenes on the background, specially when gamespot had never mentioned anything about the severe criticism the game received from fans on any article.

My 2 cents.
